It was great to see the amazing Lady Gaga looking relaxed and taking a well-earned break from touring this week. The Born This Way singer tweeted a pic of her surfing, saying, 'yeah that's me. no heels baby' while in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Back in the 1960s, the town was just another white-washed Mexican fishing village. Then Richard Burton filmed the film Night of the Iguana there and the place shot to overnight fame. In fact, Burton loved it so much he took Elizabeth Taylor there a year later. You can still stroll through the picturesque Old Town (known locally as the Zona Romántica - the Romanatic Zone!) and for a place to stay, you can't beat the Casa Velas (www.hotelcasavelas.com). This child-free hotel is nestled between the beach and the Marina Vallarta golf course, with rooms from around £200 per night.
If you want to try authentic Mexican street food, check out Tacos Panchos on the corner of Olas Altas and Badillo - a great people watching spot. Afterwards take a walk along the boardwalk (called the Malecon), here you'll find local artists selling paintings and amazing sand sculptures being made on the beach. A walk here at sunset is beautiful - it's one of the best places in Mexico to see the sun dip down into the Pacific Ocean.
