She’s wowed the Canadians and now Kate Middleton is taking the States by storm as she and Wills visit California. One of the first stops for the Royal couple is the Beverley Hills Hotel. Part of the Dorchester Collection, this Los Angeles icon, affectionately known as ‘the Pink Palace’, has played host, since its opening in 1912, to Hollywood’s great and the good – everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Madonna. When it opened, a room cost $18 per night – now you won’t get much change out of $280 (and it’s $10,800 a night for the Presidential Suite where Kate and Wills are rumoured to be staying). It was Marlene Dietrich, a regular at the hotel’s Polo Lounge, who was responsible for getting the ‘no slacks for ladies’ rule changed when she turned up there one day in trousers. Will K-Middy follow suit?
