Talking Points: Lady Gaga's 'suicide'

lady gaga

Last Sunday’s MTV Awards (already memorable thanks to Kanye) have stirred up more controversy. Lady Gaga’s performance of Paparazzi on Sunday night – in which she stabbed and then hung herself (all in the name of art, obviously) – has incensed suicide-prevention group Papryus. 'This act is not cool,' said a spokesperson. 'Sensationalising and romanticising suicide is irresponsible and celebrities, who are often idolised by young people, need to be more aware of the impact that such acts can have.' The singer, who picked up the award for Best New Artist, is known for her theatrical song-and-dance routines and that’s why fans love her (Perez Hilton described her performance as ‘Visionary. Bold. Amazing,') but do you think the Lady crossed the line this time, spraying herself with fake blood and feigning her own death? She’s not the first MTV performer to play up for the crowd (Madge caused uproar in the ’80s in her Like A Virgin wedding dress, then again in 2003 when she locked lips with Britney), but when does it stop being art and become too much? You tell us…

  • Faking your death in front of millions of impressionable teens is not a good move. Especially in the name of 'art'. It's not 'visionary' nor is it 'bold' - it's silly and irresponsible.
A woman out to shock and get noticed every moment of every day.

  • I am a HUGE gaga fan - but she went TOO FAR.

  • Sorry but this is attention seeking to the extreme, this girl needs a new management team! I like her music but everything about her screams "look at ME!!!" which is just dull frankly. Maybe she should go on the last season of Big Brother if shes that desperate for attention?

  • Wow, you can't fault 'Lady' Gaga's dedication to her cause. This woman is obsessed with getting headlines, everything she does is in the name of getting press coverage. Frankly, it's quite sad, because her music is pretty good.

  • Am i the only person who thinks this was arty?!

  • It was too far, too needy. Her performance is normally cool, cutting edge and uplifting. I love her style, her strength, her powerful persona. I understood her point, but it did not translate well and was highly irresponsible.

  • This is a woman who regularly wears leotards, had a close relationship with a china teacup and isn't exactly basing her career on a pitch-perfect singing voice. Right or wrong, is anyone really surprised she pushed it to such a ridiculous level?!

  • I really enjoyed her performance, it was a stunning bit of production.
