Kate Winslet's speech: cute or cringeworthy?

defaultdefault

Can you imagine the effort that goes into being a Hollywood star during awards season? The weeks spent agonising over what to wear? The exhausting months of working out and eating egg-white omelettes? The hours of teeth whitening, hair conditioning, skin moisturising, to create a glossier and even more perfect you to work the red carpet? Yet, as Kate Winslet's tearful monologue at the Golden Globes demonstrated, they always seem to forget one thing: the speech.

We had to watch through our fingers last night as Kate - seemingly on the cusp of hyperventilating throughout - forgot to mention Hollywood royalty Angelina Jolie, told Leo she loved him and gushed praise at the film's hair and make-up department as if her life depended on it.

Not that we haven't seen worse, of course. Remember Halle Berry's hysteria during her Martin Luther King moment? Click here to relive the cringe...

Or Sally Field's famously effusive ‘You like me, you really like me' moment? (Loving the perm, too).

And who could forget our favourite ever cringeworthy speech: Lovely Gwyneth blubbing at the Oscars? Just look at that picture - bless her.

Here's hoping for more comedy gushing at the Oscars next month... Kate to win!

  • mmmmmmmmmm, im not impressed, gushing, cringey and totally lacking in spontaneity (is that spelt right) it reminded me of Zara Philipps when she won Sports Personality of the Year she kind of made the same acceptance speech as Kate Winslet (poor). Both women are professionals, yet act so stupid without a script or horse!!

  • Cringeworthy, if they are good actors, surely they can keep it together for 5 minutes?

  • She will never live it down poor girl, I can still hear the exaggerated breathing do you think she could have been having a paic attack or was that just Kate?

  • I really hope she prepares something in case she wins the Oscar!!

  • Award speeches are never known to be any good really, and these ones are prime examples. But I think we're forgetting how overwhelming it must be to win something so prestigious after putting in so much hard work. Plus, if their speech was razor-sharp and perfect, wouldn't we be ripping it out of them for having the arrogance to assume they'd win and thus need a prepared speech?
