The audience at Giorgio Armani's AW '13 show, including movie star Charlize Theron, took in a show which transported us back to the decadence of the Jazz Age. Mr Armani brought a boy meets girl twist to his A/W 2013 collection, entitled 'Garconne', the line explored an ultra elegant, boyish way of dressing which compromised nothing in the glamour stakes.
The key garment of the show was the 'Garconne Jumpsuit' a crossed back take on dungarees which featured a soft riff on waistcoat detailing at the chest and a relaxed fit leg. Cut from black velvet for day, the all in one was layered with silk blouses and fine knits. For evening glitz was added with a jewel encrusted cream fabric and under layers removed to reveal acres of skin.
Elsewhere trousers were cut low on the hip and loose through the leg in palest blue and grey. A zipped seam fluid pant and pleated styles also offered our garçonne plenty of options. Details and accessories all walked to Armani's flexi-sexy tune. While heels added femininity it was a lounge slipper-Mary Jane hybrid which worked best. Braces were fastened to cummerbund cum peplum flourishes at the bottom of tops while berets were paired with nearly every look.
Texture was also explored with long mohair cardigans adding a cosy lounge feel. Most innovative was a shawl which accompanied one of the later eveningwear looks. Textured tassels were interspersed with reflective pailettes proving that texture works for night just as well as for day.
It was the evening looks that really dazzled our socks off. With a silk deep v-neck cocktail dress accessorised with bold concertina folds at the décolletage and an easy-to-wear black column skirt matched with a sequin stitched tee, that sense of freedom so well encapsulated by the boyish mode of dressing was impressively translated.
