While Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet has a following in the UK, here in New York City the brand inspires cult like devotion with young fashion lovers snapping up Bendet's accessibly priced dresses and separates. This season Bendet - a stalwart of international best-dressed lists was clad like a 50's heroine in a full opera skirt - told us the collection was all about bringing fantasy to traditional wardrobe staples. "It was all about romanticising American sportswear and taking these casual, preppy shapes and adding whimsy. From a traditional tuxedo blazer over a crystal embellished bustier to a traditional mini skirt with a jewelled jacket - it was that juxtaposition that I played with."
Colours were muted but playful with sorbet shades if lemon, aqua and pink adding vibrancy to cool creams. Standout looks included the combination of a full, red, white and black floor sweeping skirt with a simple white polo and a pistachio cropped top and matching leather skirt.
Also in show was Bendet's brand new bag collection. From the Olivia to the Jackie, the totes all switch up classic shapes with unexpected fabrics from silver snake look leather to pretty heavily jewelled clutches.
So what's next for the Alice + Olivia brand? "We're opening stores in Tokyo and Dubai and will really focus on the bag line." From pretty to preppy, global domination to hot totes, Bendet's got it all going on.
