Alexander Wang Spring Summer 2014: Self Branding

08 September 2013 by

Alexander Wang built his business on his connection with pop culture and the street, providing downtown kids the world over with a monochromatic, sexy but edgy uniform. The last few seasons have seen a district repositioning for the brand with an elevated offer from the young designer complete with eye-wateringly expensive fabrics and a more polished clientele in mind. Perhaps in light if Wang's appointment in Paris (as top dog at Balenciaga) he's felt able to return to his roots and serve up a Spring Summer 2014 collection that's sure to delight his diehard devotees.

The Wang logo formed the keystone for this line and was emblazoned across waistbands and punched out in leather coats and box pleat skirts. Most intricate were ribboned dresses which appeared to have been sent through a paper shredder then painstakingly reassembled to seamlessly spell out the designer's name. Elsewhere a Parental Guidance logo'd sweater complete with sheer panels dipped into Wang's childhood references while graphic opera gloves in pale pink leather shouted out only his surname.

Simple shirting, teen friendly cropped vests 'n' matching short sets in luminous plaid and even a pair of cotton men's boxer played right into Wang's youthful heartland. The luxury this time around was all in the details from the logo embroidered string tees to the elegant laser cut leather outerwear.

All this points to the conclusion that Wang has found that sweet spot for his eponymous line - managing to keep the cool kid kudos while convincingly offering a technically luxe product that's sure to delight the buyers. The question is, what does that mean for his other gig far across the pond? We say, stay tuned.
