Dior Spring Summer 2013: Raf Simons' New Minimalist Vision

28 September 2012 by

How do you deal with the most intense spotlight Paris Fashion Week has seen, for several seasons at least? The intense scrutiny that both Raf Simons and Hedi Slimane have been under for their debut collections this season would be enough to crumble most mere mortals. However, Raf Simons has just sent out a debut ready-to-wear collection that proves his super-human ability to stay true to himself even with the pressure of extreme expectations.

Opening his show with a procession of tuxedos, seen in both black and white and even including tuxedo dresses, Simons squared up to Slimane for whom the tuxedo has always been a signature style. What's more, the tuxedo was originally invented by Yves Saint Laurent, the label that will be showing come Saturday with Raf's adversary at the helm.

But not everything in the show was about masculine tailoring. In fact, over all, this was a feminine collection totally in keeping with the classic Dior aesthetic. We had iridescent gauze mini-dresses, pretty daisy embellishments, and Barry M-level glittering eyeshadow.

Stand out pieces included beautiful evening gowns with sheer overlays, voluminous opera skirts and butterfly-inspired minis. Raf also hit several trend notes including this season's stripes, bold florals, and tangerine tones.

Overall, he successfully brought a new minimalist vision to Dior but kept true to the values of the legendary fashion house while setting Hedi Slimane a tough act to follow. Congrats Raf!
