Every season Ashish takes a very specific muse, riffs on it in his trademark street trendy way, his punky pop princess muses turn up to the sit on the FROW and- oh, did we mention the sequins? Everything he makes is completely sequin encrusted – fabulously.
Five things we loved this season
The whole concept – of a geeky girl who loves maths, with so-bad-it’s-good hair in a scrunchie-fastened topknot and giant ugly Betty style glasses.
An abundance of number prints. It’s a theme that’s been done before by other designers, and by Ashish when he did letters, scattered aroung but we love it.
The tinsel sequin gold to silver graduated tracksuit and full length gown. It’s nice to see a new texture created out of sequins and it works.
A new way to wear a white shirt – how about under a grey marl hoody, or an oversized, over-the-knee length version as a dress, or as a foil to full-on sequins or black polka dot tulle.
The sequin grey-marl hoodies and track pants - Ashish always does a baggy trouser very well and so he does here. Fully sequined, fully tracksuit or fully stonewash denim – or one leg and in and one leg out.
We caught up with the man himself backstage after the show;
We loved the show! How would you describe the look? Back to School? Geek chic?
I just wanted it to look like one of those really awkward girls, who are really cool at the same time but don’t know it. Like award and geeky.
What was the clip at the start of the soundtrack?
It was from You, Me and Everyone We Know – by Miranda July. I really love her and her whole awkward, adorableness.
There’s not very much colour in this collection, it’s very monochrome for an Ashish collection.
Well, last season we just used so much colour – all the colours so this time I wanted a change, wanted to calm it down and do something cleaner.
Now, rather controversially, you’ve brought back the scrunchie! Why did you decide to do that?
Scrunchies are cool! Seriously, I know that people have very strong opinions on this and some people absolutely hate them, but it’s a giant, sequined scrunchie! What could be cooler than that? Oh – and my sequined socks! Did you like them?
