Meadham Kirchoff Spring Summer 2013: Regency RIOT!

Meadham Kirchoff’s Spring Summer 13 show may have been entitled A Cautionary Tale but the only dangerous thing we could sense were our wallets quivering with desire. Such super-pretty costume drama doesn’t often appear on the runway so unabashedly, but these two boys aren’t afraid of the saccharine… or the OTT. So imagine a regency lady of the highest standing, layered and swathed in only the finest clothes, were to be spun around in a kaleidoscope, through a disco tunnel and spat out into 2013, ready to hit East London before a trip to Tokyo. A little bit dishevelled, a lot sparkly and eccentrically layered and peeled of clothes. There were plenty of things we loved about this show, and we weren’t alone, the rest of the FROW went into a thigh-slapping woop-wooping frenzy, too. Here’s what we hearted the most…

1. The excess of everything stereotypically girly: bows, ruffles, brocades, crystal embellishment, feathers, metallics, costume jewellery, lace, knee-high socks. The clever thing is that when they’re all mashed together, the result isn’t cloyingly sweet, it’s rebelliously charming.

2. The Lilien Czech jewellery. Bling to the MAX.

3. Dirndl skirts over trousers. This skirt-over-trouser thing ain’t going anywhere! For those of you who can remember it in the nineties, rest easy, it couldn’t be more different for 2013. Meadham’s split-front satin over-skirts looked fit for a fashion princess over skinny pants.  Especially when made casual with a slogan tee.

4. The healthy glow of regency ruddy cheeks. As created by MAC makeup. They fitted perfectly with the tight curls, straw boaters by Nasir Mazar and puckered lips.

5. The final dress. Just. Beyond. Pretty. Scarlett mesh, studded to infinity with crystals, finished off with royal blue bows, lashings of costume jewellery and a model decadently scoffing a cupcake. Closely followed by the yellow embroidered onesie (more appealing than those words sound, honest).

Meadham Kirchoff cupcakes. YUM! @prinztropicana

Top moment: The Topshop space was completely transformed for Meadham Kirchoff’s show. Hand painted screens draped with fabric, lifesize dog onaments, tiered cakes, flowers, fruit…. If you’d find it on a period drama film set, you’d find it at the MK show.

Best Clash: White denim (as also seen at Christoper Kane) with a baroque printed skirt. It was like ‘80s Versace but even bolder.

Thing we’ll be copying ASAP: A hair bow!
