Jonathan Saunders Spring Summer 2013: Sequins, Spaghetti Straps & Stripes

17 September 2012 by

One of our most successful fashion exports and perhaps the most favoured British designer amongst insiders, Jonathan Saunders' shows are always a hot ticket. Showing this season in The Tanks Lobby within The Tate Modern, Saunders had conceived an ingenious scheme for the show space. Walking into the majestic Turbine Hall we were greeted with a cloud of smoke creating a close atmosphere - this was then reflected with the use of strategically placed mirrors on an angle, allowing glimpses of the runway and its audience from all the angles of the room.

When the girls finally stepped out, the scene was already charged with anticipation. First up was a run of looks which played with holographic fabrications - the pencil skirt and bomber jacket were instant FROW hits. Following this futuristic bent, we then watched a line up which drew from a disperate array of references. From 90's spaghetti strap slips to 70's sunglasses to geometric 60's psychasdelic prints this collection wove itself through decades worth of fashion to create a modern new vision.

Particularly strong looks included a colour blocked suits which clashed scarlet and burgundy, a dress emblazoned with floaty tea-drop motifs embellished with pailettes and a silver, black and green sequinned slip - an ultimate party show-stopper. This season's mega trend - stripes - was also well represented in Saunders' collection with holographic horizontal lines seen in tailoring and seperates and chevron stripes featured on dresses. Sheer fabrics - another major direction for S/S 2013 - were also integrated into colour blocked dresses adding a sensual quality to the striking frocks.

There was office appropriate tailoring, eveningwear and super cool pieces that will defintely impress your friends - basically this was a collection that ran the full gamut of what we look to fashion to do for us - inspire, excite and practically furnish our wardrobes. We say job well done Mr Saunders!
