Last season Ralph Lauren was captivated by the romance of Downton Abbey and turn of the century British upper crust society. The season before he transported us to the world of Gatsby with 20s silhouettes and Jazz Age spirit. Lauren is doubtless a fashion dreamer continually drawing inspiration from imagined visions of the past and present. This season he was on a trip to Spain and Latin America, and his collection, with its Matador jackets, ponchos, suede jackets and jodhpurs all finished off with Cordobes hats, left us in no doubt where his fantasies lay.
Sure Conquistador chic might be a bit costume-y and the flamenco style ruffles might be a bit OTT for some tastes, but there was pure precision in his execution – especially when it came to evening wear. From ivory silk gowns embellished simply with a single red rose to scarlet fish-tail floor sweepers, this collection was teeming with red carpet contenders. Karlie Kloss gave us one of the most winning looks – a tailored maxi skirt paired with a crisp white dress shirt accessorised with a fan shaped clutch. Simple, striking and definitely stylish.
Ralph is not the only designer who has taken us on an exotic journey this season – we had a global jet setter with eclectic tastes at Tory Burch, while at Diane von Furstenberg we saw the wardrobe of a 70s inspired heiress on a trip to Rome. That mood of escapism, glamour and exoticism is certainly one to keep in mind as we head to Europe.
Top Face: Karlie and Joan making up the dream team once again.
Best Look: The tailoring was particularly strong – there were even Scarface-sque looks for all you Tony Montana fans out there.
Vibe: Spanish Rose meets Uptown Chic.
