Beauty Highlights At London Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013: Psychedelic Nails At PPQ & Tooth Brushes At Felder Felder

15 September 2012 by

It was a busy first day at London Fashion Week and on the beauty front, we saw a mixed bag with new trends emerging left right and centre. So without further ado, allow us to introduce our round-up of need-to-know backstage beauty from Friday at the shows…

1. First up, was Maria Grachvogel where we fell head-over-heals for the beautiful plaits masterminded by hair hero Federico Ghezzi. “The look is inspired by the collection; soft materials meet structured tailoring and it is the same in the hair.  The back section is soft and fluffy, but the front is very sharp and sleek,” he told us. Isn’t it lovely?

2. The beauty look at Bora Aksu was based on Queen Mary of Romania (who lived from 1875 to 1938 just f.y.i). Talk about a royal flush! Makeup artist Maria Papadopoulou researched her lifetime to find out what the makeup of the era was like, before bringing it bang up to date by adding a contemporary metallic flash to the eye with the amazing Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes in Bordeaux. We particularly loved that models had their skin drenched with the uber-nourishing natural Gazelli skincare pre-makeup application to help achieve a flawless finish.

3. At Sass & Bide, we tucked into a delicious and nutritious fruit-salad while dancing to "Nightcall" by Kavinsky - one of our most favourite tunes no less. Over in beauty Charlotte Tilbury continued this season’s fresh, clean modern makeup trend with oodles of sculpting. “The thicker the brows the better” she told us, “They are handsome, sculpted and boyish” so we are doing away with mascara too. MAC brow pencils in Spiked and Lingering we used to create a spattering of freckles. Makeup doesn’t get much more wearable (and desirable) than this.

4. Grazia fave Adam Reed was backstage at Felder Felder brushing model’s hair with a natural bristle toothbrush. Yes, really. “You can buy them for £5 at Amazon,” he told us. “There’s a real return to straight this season and we needed a beautiful sheet of hair so we prepped it with Sebastian Professional Trilliant beforesliding irons across the hair from root to tip.  Running a toothbrush through it ensures it is perfectly sleek, smooth and devoid of comb marks.”  Who knew?

5. With a sea of nude nails popping up this season, we got terribly excited when some nail art turned up. At PPQ, Katie Hughes - Global Colour Director of Butter London - created psychedelic, 70s rounded nails with their Primrose Hill Picnic and Union Jack Black varnishes.  Want to give it a go? Place alternate drops of nail varnish in a bowl of warm water before using a toothpick to drag through it. Scoop your nail under the floating varnish and then upwards and out of the water to achieve this amazing marbled effect. Give it a go, we dare you.
