Donna Karan Spring Summer 2013: The Beauty Of Nature

11 September 2012 by

There was a distinctly gentle mood at Donna Karan's show this afternoon, and it wasn't just down to a colour palette of soothing organic pigments. Set against the theme song from Avatar (at first we thought Lion King, but Shazaam corrected us), this collection was all about capturing the beauty of nature. With stiff hammered cottons, fine silk jersey and clean shades of eau de nil, denim and dusky rose, there was a sense of environmental focus - but this was no typical 'eco' line. Instead we had undulating drapery mimicking natural forms - from Calla lilies to branch patterns, organic motifs could be seen throughout the collection.

There was also the sense of our natural world clashing with our plasticated modern times - reflected by the inclusion of perspex headbands and amulets to several looks, which gave our ethereal maidens a futuristic quality. Karan's point was clear - the beauty of the natural world must be preserved and appreciated in our digitally attuned times - and with such a pretty line of light as gossamer dresses on show, its a message that's definitely worth taking on board.
