Kenzo & Karlie Kloss’ Escalator Spectacular: Paris Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012 Show Report

Yesterday evening a rather soggy (the rain has unfortunately also been attending pfw) heavy weight fash pack (and P. Diddy!) piled into a huge university building in Paris and almost instantly the hunched shoulders of the frozen crowd lifted as they took in the fabulous, colourfully lit atrium.

By the time we had found our seats- on the single row lining the open corridors- in the yellow block of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie the energy in the huge space had reached fever pitch! There were Magnolia Bakery (yes that famous NY haunt) cupcakes (freshly made by bakers flown in for the occasion) waiting for each guest on their seat and as the benches filed up it was anyone’s guess as to how the models were going to make it down the escalators and around the vast catwalk spanning three giant floors! …Abseil we decided.

And then the music boomed and the chatter stopped as Karlie Kloss appeared wiggling her hips down the escalators and before we knew it, zooming past us in a fabulous wool skirt suit layered with a tiger head sweater (which has waiting list written all over it!) Swiftly followed by the second of the fifty (yes fifty!) looks and the show was in full swing.

This is Kenzo’s second season with longtime chums and design partners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim at the helm as creative directors and the genius duo (who founded Opening Ceremony in 2002) have certainly sprinkled their cool dust on the Paris-based fashion house. The interiors inspired collection (the first clue of which was in our wooden paint stirrer invitations - see above) was played up with marble-tile and bunches-of-grapes prints, exploded with rich, exciting textures on the kind of brilliantly modern silhouettes that make you want to own the lot- immediately; and by the cheers Leon and Lim received when they too came down the escalators at the end of the show, it seems everyone is in agreement… the queue for this collection will be one to rival those New York cupcakes on a Saturday afternoon on Bleeker Street!
