Katy Perry at Viktor & Rolf in Paris: Autumn Winter 2012 Show Report

03 March 2012

It is the Saturday of Paris Fashion Week, and all of Paris's most eccentric and alternative designers are on show today. There was the Japanese conceptualist Junya Watanabe this morning, followed by the ultra chic but als serious Belgian  Haider Ackermann after him. At lunchtime it was the turn of Viktor + Rolf the Dutch duo who like their show to have a theme, and a bit of showmanship about it. Later today we will be at Vivienne Westwod and Jean Paul Gaultier's shows.

At Viktor + Rolf's show last season, two jazz singers sang breathily through the catwalk presentation. Today it was the stage set which set the tone; a giant full moon was suspended above the back of the runway, which itself was curved like a meandering pathway that seemed to suggest a Hansel and Gretel or Little Red Riding Hood-like fairytale element to the atmosphere. The catwalk photographers even started to howl at one point. That was until Katy Perry arrived with a blue beehive, blue dress, and vertiginous blue high heels, then their flashbulbs went crazy for her. She looked like a younger, more fashionable version of Marge Simpson.

The show itself? Hmm. Well if you like to wear very loose-fit fur-print silk jumpsuits to work or on nights out, to wear dresses that only cover half your body or even if you like your massively thick Fox fur coats to have panels shaved out of them -  creating a Michelin man effect – then this show was for you.

This was not always woman friendly stuff, though Viktor + Rolf did show their signature tailoring items of trench coats, bold black trouser suits, and panelled evening dresses – these ones hung with swags of bronze and black curtain fringing - off within the show. This are definitely not clothes that will translate terribly well to your average British woman, but Katy Perry will look a dream in them.
