Mary Katrantzou on Her Autumn / Winter 2012 Show Backstage at London Fashion Week

Mary Katrantzou made commonplace objects works of art with her autumn/winter collection, which debuted at London Fashion Week on Tuesday. With a pencil, spoon, clothes hanger, chess piece, a hedge and typewriter all receiving the Mary-treatment and as they were transformed into the most incredible prints.

Focusing for the first time on head-to-toe colour (like the bright crayons on her show invitation), Mary was drawn to these everyday objects because of their strong colour-identity, as she explained backstage after the show 'when you think of yellow you think of a HB pencil, when you think of grass, its always bright green and so on…'

As always with Mary’s collections the mouthwatering prints are integral to the way in which her silhouettes play out, and for autumn/winter ‘12 the depicted everyday objects were counterbalanced with Victorian bustles, hints of Elizabethan corsetry and intricate seamed shapes.

It was also a London Fashion Week first as Katrantzou collaborated with the incredible French Haute Couture embroidery house Lesage who helped bring to life Mary’s bubbling bathtub dress with amazing 3D pearls, made the blades of grass on another design stand to attention with Swarovski crystals and who manipulated the yellow pencils that were integrated into a swirl engulfing the body on a third cocktail number.

On balance Mary also felt it was crucial to include more wearable separates in her show too, 'there are always pared-down pieces in my commercial collection but I wanted to put some in my catwalk show this time too, its important to show women how easy it can be to wear print if you break it down.'

And the introduction of some fabulous wide-legged trousers with a beautiful jumper was just as adored by the crowd as the dramatic baby-doll dresses with layers of billowing chiffon, and her other more lavishly embellished creations.

Each season Mary exceeds her last collection with her unique vision and incredible talent and this breathtaking collection has put her at the top of the London Fashion Week crop!
