Craig Lawrence Autumn Winter 2012 at London Fashion Week

20 February 2012 by

Craig Lawrence told us backstage at his Autumn Winter 2012 show of fantastic technical knitwear, that he’d been inspired by air hostesses from the Sixties, the heyday of flying. ‘What do you like so much about air hostesses, Craig? Is it their personalities or their uniforms?’ we asked him. ‘I think it’s that funny combination of very formal, strict tailoring, and then that quite tacky, errr kitsch side to it’ he said.

To the untrained eye, Craig’s collection might not resemble the usual idea of an air hostess’s uniform, after all, there were no neckerchiefs or little hats. But the collection won’t disappoint Craig’s army of fans, who queued for ages to get into his salon presentation. His celebrity admirers include lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton, Bjork and Florence Welch and know him for the clingy, textured, futuristic garments he knits using metallic yarns, strips of fabric for chunky textures and crystals from Swarovski Elements.

All of that was here for Autumn Winter, and we particularly loved the silhouette of many of the looks – clingy pencil skirts or slinky knitted trousers teamed with knitted long-sleeved crop tops with a Nineties vibe – very right for now. (Buffalo trainers optional!). Craig had picked his colour way; sludgy Seventies brown with flashes of neon orange – after thinking about the seat fabrics on National Express coaches. Would Craig like to design some textiles for his own range of coaches, or maybe a bus route in London? (going to Dalston of course) ‘Ooh – I’d rather have my own airline’ he said his face lighting up. Craig Air – now that has a bit of a ring to it, doesn’t it?
