Big blonde hair, Billy Idol on the soundtrack and a runway of illuminated squares borrowed from a Michael Jackson video; Lucite platforms so high they are have become more pedestal than shoe. What else could it be but a Versace show? From the first appearance of Lindsey Wixson in her tailored white shorts and gold studded t shirt we knew we were in for a classic Versace moment.
Donatella has been dusting off the archive for the upcoming collaboration with H&M. And she’s also been giving Lady Gaga a tour of the houses’s history. And clearly she has been having a lot of fun down there among the Medusa heads and mini skirts for this was collection that was redolent of the heady days of Gianni and those blingtastic collections full of supermodels in following spotlights.
But Gianni was surely smiling down on this one, for it was also assuredly Donatella. The silk prints, a familiar link in the Versace DNA chain, were pastel sea horses and starfish. The suits had bandeau tops under the zipped biker jackets. The pencil skirts had plisse chiffon trims underneath that put way more wiggle in the walk. And the finale gowns of draped jersey anchored with crystal starfish or punctuated with those gold studs will not disappoint fans of the plunging neckline and thigh high split.
If not a riot, then I predict a highly excited shopping crowd, at the very least, come November when the H&M collection hits the stores.
