LFW S/S '12 Show Report: Christopher Kane
Can swimming pool sandals ever be cool? No. But we love that Christopher Kane always picks something that is totally off kilter, and turns it into a 'fashion' item. Whether people will wear them or not is a different matter, but that's not the point. Yesterday Christopher chose to show in a vast empty office space in the shadow of St Pauls Cathedral. It was the third empty office we'd been in in three days, which was a sore reminder of the times, but was the perfect bright and airy space to showcase SS'12.
Traditionally Christopher picks a single theme and runs with it. But this season he opened it up a bit, although again he plucked inspiration from his childhood, drawing on a teenage girl's bedroom - no doubt his sister, Tammy's. How that explains the opening section of sharp shift dresses and separates, I'm not sure, but it makes sense come to the chinzy florals, and the 'sticker' dresses. While the crystal knee jeans seemed to be another one of his 'so wrong' pieces, he weirdly makes them right. Maybe I'm totally under his influence (as we all are), but I would seriously wear them. This collection was so refined, that it will have the longevity of the season and beyond, and will be harder to spot as an unmistakable Christopher Kane look, as the fluoro tattoo collection of a year ago, or the crochet and liquid dresses of last season.
And fittingly, like the teenage girls who influence him, after the show I immediately downloaded his haunting Lana Del Rey's 'Video Games' soundtrack, and listened to it on repeat when I got home.
