LFW S/S ’12 report: Mulberry

Mulberry do like to be beside the seaside

Before you even got to Mulberry’s show space, the theme of their s/s ’12 collection was apparent: outside Claridge’s - where the show was staged - was an old fashioned ice cream van and the hotel’s entrance had been transformed into a striped circus tent.  Once inside, 10 enormous 99 ice creams stood century up steps leading to a corridor festooned with thousands of animal shaped balloons and brightly coloured beach balls.  Can you tell what it is yet?  When the first models emerged from an enormous laughing funfair mouth, to the strains of ‘Oh we do like to be beside the seaside’ there wasn’t a person in the audience who hadn’t cottoned on to the fact that next summer, the Mulberry girl will be channeling what the show notes called ‘kiss me quick chic’, in other words the Great British Seaside!

From Neopolitan ice cream -stripes, to a whole host of colourful waterproof cover ups (v. practical!) worn over floaty summery dresses and prints depicting carousel animals it was seaside fun all the way.  Of course. bags are always at the heart of Mulberry collections and this one was no different.  The new story is the Travel Collection which is made up of the Travel Day Bag, the Oversized Travel Bag and the Travel Camera bag – inspired by vintage steamer trunks, you can recognize them from their metal corners and luggage tags.  Mulberry icons – Alexa, Lily and Bayswater all took a spin down the catwalk too in their smaller incarnations, the models carried them by their top handles and left the long straps trailing.

Mulberry  FROWSs are legendary in fashion circles and this one disappoint, at the 10am show I attended Kate Moss (dressed in double beached denim topped with a fedora) was holding court, flanked by her BF - hairdresser James Brown and Twilight’s never-smiling Kristen Stewart (we worry about that girl!).  Also in attendance were Romola Garai, Hayley Atwell, Laura Bailey and Harley Vera Newton.  While at the later show Olivia Palermo, Sunday Girl, Mary Charteris and a whole bevvy of society lovelies had the paps flashbulbs popping.  Nice work Mulberry’s celebrity wranglers – I imagine they are  enjoying stiff drink or two now!  But despite the decidedly cool A list contingent, it was the Mulberry doggy gang, both on and off the catwalk that we were most interested in (sadly my own pooch Boris, had to decline his invitation to the show as he couldn’t be trusted not get overcome in the presence of Kate Moss).  Dressed in Mulberry dog collection (natch) they definitely got our votes for best dressed of the day!
