In the same way that many dream of being the bronzed Isabel Marant girl of Paris, thousands of die hard fans from London to Tokyo would give their left legs to fulfill the dreamy, laid-back simplicity and elegance that the Margaret Howell woman embodies. And, unlike other items the fashion crowds go crazy for it doesn't matter to the wearer whether anyone else spies that it's Margaret or this season or not. You know that it's top quality, you will look forever chic and you are in the inner circle of the Howell club. This is never about being conspicuous.
So, what are the S/S'12 items her disciples will snag first? With the British seaside and everything nautical in mind (a not wholly unfamiliar inspiration for the designer - if it ain't broke...) then the navy trench, full linen midi skirts with cute grosgrain waistbands, soft stripy or the sunshiney cerulean blue shirts and '50s fit and flare shirt dresses are on the list. Other pieces to tempt were the yellow fisherman anorak (surprisingly not the first we've seen of those this season), safari khaki separates, the flash of a coral hem on a silky stone-coloured frock and the simple accessories - a double wrap belt and black and white high shine patent "nan-dals" are instant staples. Of course, a perfectly cut blazer and simple Breton will always keep plenty of women on the straight and narrow easy-chic line.
