LFW S/S ‘12 Report: Orla Kiely

17 September 2011

As much as we love having a purse, bike and fruit bowl covered in Orla Kiely’s gorgeous retro prints, it’s her clothing that really has us drooling. And for her S/S’12 collection, the Irish interior guru took us straight to the seaside.

The inspiration of old summer holiday snaps from the Forties and Fifties shone out through fresh white dresses worn with socks + wedge sandals and straw boater hats. The pastel palette was delicious, particularly on the colour-popping satchels in yellows, pinks and greens, and the silhouettes were utterly feminine, with flared skirts, high waists and capped sleeves. As for Kiely’s much-loved prints, they popped up on ankle-biting monochrome trousers and knee-length frocks with Peter Pan collars.

Alexa Chung has made no secret of her love for Orla, the Queen of Prints, often sporting her no-fuss but girlie designs, and we can easily picture her in the muted leg-flashing dresses for an afternoon in the sun. Elle Fanning would be wise to get involved in the collection’s Sixties vibe too – wouldn’t she look cute in that sailor girl playsuit? And no doubt Keira Knightley is already on speed dial after wowing us in that navy shirtdress during the recent Venice Film Festival. As for us? Pass us a strawberry icecream, and we’ll see you at the beach.
