MFW A/W ‘11 Report: Versace

26 February 2011

The fashion crowd gathered this evening in a cavernous tent that had been erected in the courtyard of the Versace sales HQ (the palazzo had once been Gianni Versace's Milanese residence). It was minus 2 outside, but we soon stopped complaining about the cold when all four members of Duran Duran took their frow seats right across the catwalk from where we were seated.  My teenage self was loving the major bragging rights I'd have to boast about this to my best friend who was like, the world's biggest Durany ever! They are playing a private concert for the fash pack later on this evening, I expect there will be much swooning and screaming (any chance to let our hair down!).

On to the clothes... Donatella Versace sent out a collection that will no doubt have the cash registers ringing in the Versace stores around the world.  All the house favourites were included; for day the Versace girl will be wearing belted military jackets complete with shiny gold buttons, paired with skirts that hit four inches above the knee , or second skin polo neck sweaters with short pleated leather skirts. For cocktails (I imagine the Versace girl drinks a lot of cocktails!), she slips into a brief black wool sheath that snakes around her neck like a manacle, or one split to the thigh and emblazoned with a bold graphic vine in purple or yellow. For the invitations with a black tie dress code there is plenty of choice (and no doubt we'll be seeing some of these on the Oscars red carpet this Sunday); chiffon gowns trimmed with fluttering maribou feathers in navy, white, black or yellow. Or the closing look of the show and most succesful of the collection - a drapey glittery silver knit gown, with a short maribou train, which, when Arizona Muse (the model everyone here in Milan is talking about) turned to make her way back up the catwalk, revealed a delicate racer back detail. Sexy, glamourous and modern.  Donatella nailed it.
