NYFW A/W ‘11 Beauty Report: Jason Wu goes for gold!

12 February 2011

If Jason Wu’s A/W ‘11 catwalk is anything to go by, bleached eyebrows are still in. The models, including Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn, looked strikingly dramatic backstage before yesterday’s show with their barely-there brows and severe, swept-back hair.

Wu’s collection was inspired by Polidori's photos of the restoration of Versailles and the beauty look perfectly complemented the clothes, with heaps of timeless glamour and opulent detailing. ‘The makeup is rich and velvety, like fabric’, said MAC’s make-up maestro Diane Kendal. On the eyelids, a sweep of gold powder was framed by midnight blue that angled up towards the temple for a smokey Batwoman-esque effect. ‘I applied gold in the center of the eye, so that it pops open wide with each blink,’ he said.

Over in Camp Hair, the models’ tresses were centre-parted then pulled into a tight ponytail at the nape of the neck before being twisted upwards and pinned, leaving several strands to fan out vertically. These strands were then covered in another splash of genuine 24-karat gold (no, seriously) to create a dazzling firework effect. ‘This look is about elegance and attention to detail,’ said Odile Gilbert for Aveda. We can’t wait to give that one a try!

As for the nails, they were a rich ruby-red dipped in more extravagant gold. ‘Jason asked for some length on the nail for a more dressed-up feel, in much the same way you slip on your stiletto heels,’ said Jan Arnold. ‘In fact, the shoes in the show have gold heels too’.

So there you have it, folks – A/W ‘11 is the time to match your eyeshadow, nail varnish, hair and heels! Just maybe leave the bleached brows to the experts, yeah?
