NYFW S/S '11 report: JASON WU

11 September 2010

Twit-t-WU. Jason Wu, Michelle Obama’s go-to dress designer has a new logo – a night owl called Miss Wu. It’s difficult to imagine a more perfect symbol for the wise-beyond-his-years 28-year-old Chinese designer, who also must have a pulled a few nocturnal all-nighters in the lead-up his latest accomplished show.
What the Wu woman has come to expect is smart, sexy, sophisticated cocktail dresses. And the collection didn’t disappoint. Adopting what is rumoured to be the palette for Spring ’11 - fierce flowerbed shades of yellow, raspberry and ink blue - the dresses were light-as-air frothy floral print chiffon – in short, the perfect dress for Spring.
This was a more rounded collection than in past seasons –  alongside the perfect printed cocktails dresses, there are also printed or bow-decked sheer blouses; to be worn with of-the-moment tailored flared trousers, boyfriend jackets, or high-waisted city shorts. The more casual feel continued with floral print sarong skirts worn with stripy long-sleeved fine knits, as well as sharp sleeveless or strapless tailored shift dresses.
And now there is even more for the Wu woman to spend her hard-earned money on, as this season the label is debuting its accessories collection – what the designer refers to as ‘old Hollywood glamour’-inspired bags and shoes; think ladylike frame bags from small clutch bags to giant totes. All worn with turbans… and owl-like round shades.
