PFW AW10 Report: Balmain

Hmm, things in Paris didn’t get off to a great start (for me anyway, I only arrived today). NY was all about the classics, London felt so professionally modern, while Milan made us want to slink into our tailored jackets again (thanks to Dolce & Gabbana), but according to Balmain we’re stuck to last season and before. We loved big shoulders, we really did, but to be honest, they do seem rather dated. So when Balmain’s Christophe Decarnin showed them again in fur, leopard print and gold lame it was a bit disappointing, although no big surprise. It felt fabulous, but fabulous for who? The ladies that lunch in much better places than us, obviously. Loads of sequins, loads of minis, loads of last minute spray tans, loads of legs. But it all felt a bit wrong. The pointy-shouldered jackets felt old, the lame dresses were a slash too far, the tapestry tailoring a step to the costume-department too close, and the gold fringing felt like Dolly Parton in Vegas had been robbed. Normally we love that Dacarnin sticks it to the cash-strapped stores, but this felt a bit too much out of sync with how people want to dress now.
