Helen Byrne is our first LFW Blogger! Caroline Charles - Who knew?

20 February 2010

Now, normally the name Caroline Charles doesn't get my fashwan juices flowing. After all, the designer is more famous for dressing the late Princess Diana (who, whilst I loved the Lady, wasn't exactly Lady Gaga).

But... at 11am on a drizzly February morning in London, I put all of that history aside because, ladies and gentlemen, I have just one word to describe the Autumn Winter 2010 collection and it has three syllables - fab-u-lous!

The black PVC cloche hats gave me visions of 'Pretty Woman,' but paired with a modest herringbone style grey and cream wrap coat, trimmed with black leather; and a cute pinafore dress that would have been at home in Audrey's closet (Hepburn or Tautou); the look was inspired. The influence of Chanel's sell-out Jade nail polish lived on in the form of cute square cut bangles, beautiful leather gloves and skinny belts which all looked amazing paired with the simple monochrome palette.

I'm not quite sure why some of the models were wearing sunglasses (maybe they were shielding their eyes from the snow?) but I will forgive that for a chance to get my hands on one of those delicious jewel-toned velvet slouchy blazers in emerald or ruby, which, along with the matching turned-up casual trousers and silky evening top would be my perfect outfit if I ever get invited to a country pile out on the Yorkshire moors for pre-dinner G&T's with Tilda Swinton.

Diana, you were ahead of your time... Caroline Charles, who knew?
