NYFW Show Report: Zero Maria Cornejo

18 February 2010

Maria Cornejo is one of the fashion pack’s best-kept secrets. Her front rows are generally filled with editors making shopping lists, not only for their magazine pages, but for their own wardrobes.

She has a clear, urban point of view and a winning way with an easy jersey dress and a super cool leather jacket.

For AW 2010 she developed that signature androgynous handwriting. Asymmetric waistcoats over skinny leather stretch pants; tweed wraps with the ease of a big belted blanket; a soft but sharply tailored jumpsuit; wool coats with panels of inset leather and one of the coolest leather boyfriend jackets I have seen this week, confirmed her as the go-to label for downtown urban chic.
And just as she seems in danger of being lodged too neatly in a pigeon hole, floor-length evening dresses that looked like they had been cut from one square of fabric delivered some irresistibly languid evening glamour.
