NYFW Show Report: The Row

17 February 2010

This is the high-end collection from Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, and it is one that is gathering a reputation for simple, day to day luxury at an eye watering price.

It was a small show, only 20 outfits. But the industry big hitters from Anna Wintour to Harvey Nichols, were all front row. From the mostly black or creamy white outfits, it looked like someone in the design room was channelling classic Jil Sander.

A simple cashmere collarless coat held closed with a leather belt and worn over skinny trousers; or a T-shirt made of leather fused with jersey, or the simple silk evening dresses with their corseted basques on top: it was all reminiscent of Sander’s career-long pursuit of perfect minimalist luxury.

It might have seemed to be an unlikely goal for a pair of twenty-four-year-old Californian sometime-TV stars. Maybe in the past their fans have been used to buying Olsen twin dolls, but the fashion crowd appeared to have been won over and were making mental shopping lists for the clothes…
