With an Ecco Domani fashion foundation award under his belt, hot new American designer Prabal Gurung was able to fund his first full on catwalk show at NYFW for A/W’10. After only two seasons presenting a static collection, he already had the fash pack and a string of stylish A-listers in a hyped up whizz over his slimming cocktail dresses and slinky separates (check out this week’s Grazia for a profile of the trio of fresh talent from the USA including Prabal, Brian Reyes and Winter Kate) and as Grazia reported, we had a feeling this would be the year that his rising star launched into full trajectory. So with a front row including none other than the inimitable Anna Wintour and gorgeous daughter Bee Schaffer, Zoe Saldana (possibly Oscar dress shopping – or so we hope) and Rachel Zoe (who first introduced Prabal’s red-carpet-winning dresses into the limelight by dressing Demi in them twice) then it’s official – Mr Gurung has arrived.
Inspiration for his latest offering comes from a visualisation of ‘warp speed’. Ironic, as many critics have commented, that Gurung has so fast become a NYFW sensation that his collection should be based upon the very same idea of such intense speed. Prabal confessed to Grazia a few weeks ago, that due to this season being his first runway show, “The pressure is definitely on!” But there was nothing rushed or panicked about each look – Prabal’s ability to control colour, shape and decoration proved once again that his frocks are the ultimate in figure flattery and femininity – with clever slimming fabric inserts and bump skimming drapery. But along with his signature sheaths, Prabal revealed some fantastic tailoring skills too. The most notable piece being the opening look coat modelled by Anya Kazakova - a sliced half white, half black power cocoon with a sexy thigh slit most definitely set the mood for Prabal’s elegant yet edgy collection.
