Milan Fashion Week show report: Versace

26 September 2009

It’s Versace, so of course there is a front row celebrity-fest; this time, it was Janet Jackson making her second appearance in Milan (after attending Giorgio Armani’s show on Friday). The FROW flashbulb frenzy continued with Anna Wintour, arriving with Mario Testino, and taking their places alongside Anna’s close friend Roger Federer and his wife, plus Rupert Everett looking super-suave in a black shirt and white trousers.

Donatella Versace presented an Alice in Wonderland meets Barbarella fantasy world, which exploded in a mega mix of prints, optical illusions and micro patterns on an army of glossy girls in vertiginous platforms. Super-toned pins were once again the order of the day for micro minis with embroidered seams and inter-twining micro chains, and minidresses in rubber or lacquer-finish mesh.

A plethora of fluorescent brights and mix and match prints in stretch fabrics were underpinned with studs and microchains and here was no shortage of tops with metallic cuffs, derriere-grazing miniskirts in laser-cut leather, and second skin jackets with metal inserts; everyday pieces in Versace world for Donatella’s sexy-dressing customers.

For evening there were vibrant chiffon ruched gowns in peach, pink and turquoise, the bodices accentuated with silvery chains, strewn with silver leather triangles, or constructed from metal mesh. We’re seeing a lot of the Sixties influence this season, but as ever, no one does it sexier than Donatella Versace.
