Milan Report: Giorgio Armani’s hems fly sky high

Short short short. Not only was this Armani show all about a thigh high hemline, but it seemed that Mr A himself was out waving goodbye at the end of the runway just as we were settling in. The message was clear: short, bright and shiny. Perfect for the youthful celebrity GA following. And here was the best front row eye candy of the day: Anna Wintour had brought her Bessie mate Roger Federer, who she had to drag through the throngs of paps by the hand like a wayward child because a very toned looking Janet Jackson was causing quite a stir among the gentlemen of the press. With a body like hers, the leggy looks will clearly pose no problem.

We are onto our third fashion city now, and there is increasing cause for concern for anyone with less than perfect pins next summer. Mr A’s trousers are among the best in the business, but this season there was only one pair: a lovely soft pleated offering, cuffed and cropped at the ankle. But apart from that, the dresses came thick and fast in a range of shiny brights: emerald puff balls with sporty blue jackets; bell shaped taffeta skirts with plunging V necklines; drapy tunic dresses laden with sequins and pretty wrap evening dresses embroidered with big overblown flowers and anchored with huge belts.

But here’s the rub. Almost all of these dresses were so short the shorts they had underneath were clearly visible. Yikes. All the bell shapes were underpinned with a thigh grazing pencil skirt. And all of that with flat shoes! The red carpet goddesses will be causing panic among the paps all summer long, but for mere mortals there seems to be no choice but to start those spinning classes now. Maybe it was the rising panic that made the show fly by.

5 things we loved
1. Big hounds tooth checked jackets
2. Emerald bell shaped skirts with sporty blue structured jackets
3. The sequinned tunics (over shorts)
4. The peony embroidered evening dress
5. The soft pleated trousers
