LFW show report: Matthew Williamson’s futuristic comeback

He’s back! And apparently we weren’t the only ones eagerly awaiting the return of Matthew Williamson to LFW this year. Yasmin Le Bon, Leigh Lezark and Grazia girl-crush Olivia Palermo were also there to see what the designer, who has been M.I.A from the LFW shores for several seasons, was bringing to the catwalk. And he didn’t disappoint with a feminine, sexy and sharp range. Taking his trademark boho style in a more futuristic direction, Matthew sent out models (with some seriously slicked-back hair) in silver, neon yellow, bright pinks and purples, as well as colour-of-the-LFW-moment, lime.

Embellishment was the key word with beaded puff-ball shoulders on dresses, colourful jewelled collars and tops covered in mirror panels. Some of our favourites included a robotic-chic bejewelled silver mini dress, as well as a mirrored vest tucked into a high-waisted crinkled cream skirt. Still rocking the Williamson print with some fantastic kaleidoscope tops and maxis, there was also a more-structured element to the collection, as sharp shoulders and tailored jackets added a cleaner edge to the feminine outfits. And if the clothes weren’t making a statement enough, we just couldn’t keep our eyes off the shoes – sky-scraper peep-toes with a huge bow (that reminded us a little bit of the Batman distress signal). Some seriously sexy footwear that was perfect for this much-anticipated show.

What else we loved:

  1. The 90’s feel of a casual apricot tank with a triangle-patterned tulip skirt. Standing out among all the futuristic get-up, it sent us right into nostalgic summer holiday mode.
  2. Beaded black hotpants, who’d have thought?!
  3. A shimmery off-white trench with sheer chiffon sleeves and a sequin waist belt creating a gorgeous silhouette. We could just picture a Manolo-clad Miss Bradshaw running down the NY streets in this number.
  4. A beautiful black cut-out maxi and statement turquoise necklace adding a touch of Grecian glamour to the show.
