LFW show report: Unique pulls in the stars

20 September 2009

Topshop Unique has become something of a blockbuster show at London Fashion Week over the past few seasons. If you can make it past the never-ending spreads on offer, you’re then faced with the challenge of edging past the thousands of paparazzi on hand for the inevitably star-studded front row. This time round it all kicked off when Brix Smith-Start walked across the catwalk to plonk her dog Gladys on Marigay McKee’s lap, just so that the Harrods buyer’s daughter could play with her during the show. Then Sir Philip Green, accompanied by burly body guards (oh and also Kate Moss) marched across the space to take up his seat in the frow between the supermodel and his daughter Chloe, while Nicola Roberts sat alongside Alexa Chung, Peaches Geldof, Jaime Winstone and NY fashionista Olivia Palermo.

Unique’s Spring Summer girl is best described – if such a thing exists – as a British Erin Wasson. Think sitting on a beach (ok, so we know we don’t have that many amazing beaches here but roll with us for a second) watching the sun go down with a bottle of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Boyfriend jeans became boyfriend shorts, faded denim jackets were rocked up with patches and maxi dresses were printed to look like surfboards. We weren’t so sure about the neon cycling shorts layered under denim, but sportswear was toughened up to the max as shredded tracksuit jersey came stomping down the runway.

California girl bubblegum pink lipstick was also a highlight, and as for accessories, it looks like the bumbag that Marc Jacobs tried so hard to introduce into the mainstream with his Marc by Marc show two seasons ago will be making a comeback. Well, that or a rucksack. Oh, and place your bets now as to the nickname the Topshop team came up with for the shark motif that ran throughout the collection. Given the rocked up vibe we left the show with, our money’s on Jaws.
