LFW show report: Margaret Howell

19 September 2009

Cramming ourselves into Margaret Howell's Wigmore Street store for her spring/summer show, we were greeted by the sound of seagulls playing and elbowed our way to our seats; seaside-y white-washed benches. Alexa Chung took her seat in the front row (naturally) where, just like us, she enthusiastically scribbled notes on what was a corker collection of English summer classics, reworked and beautifully styled.

As the upbeat music started, with Louboutins tapping along, all eyes were on the classic Breton stripes and navy lightweight duffel coat (genius!) that opened the show. Signature black-and-white checked shirts were thrown insouciantly over matching knickers, and a beige linen maxi-trench and khaki-coloured pea-coat (which would have felt truly at home in the East Hamptons in high summer) totally rocked. Highlights were the cropped jersey vests paired with demure highwaisted pencil skirts, wide-leg pinstripe trousers, mannish panama hats and sun-bleached cotton dresses belted casually at the waist. This was a mouth-wateringly fresh collection that makes us yearn for long summer days on the Riviera. Margaret Howell at her best.
