LFW: Sass & Bide are here to stay

19 September 2009

Sass & Bide made the decision to show in the capital for the first time to celebrate their 10th anniversary and London Fashion Week’s 25th. But backstage before the show, one of Australia’s most iconic design duos - Sarah Jane Clarke  and Heidi Middleton - told us they’re now here to stay. And it was almost as if their heavily embellished collection set out to prove they’re a worthy addition to the seaon's schedule. Not a piece of denim in sight (Sass & Bide’s Frayed Misfits are a perennial favourite amongst the fashion pack), the Aztec prints and metallics inspired by recent travels were pure rock chick – and no doubt appealed to the real rockers Alison Mosshart and Twiggy sitting in the front row.

There were black body con dresses with studding around the collar, cuffs and hemlines. Lightweight chainmail harnesses were slung under low-cut racer-back tops and paired with diaphanous cotton skirts. Sequin harem pants were cut to the knee, and the statement collar necklaces covered in rivets and fringing were want-to-rip-straight-off-the-catwalk-amazing. As for this season’s version of the Black Rats – those ruched leggings that were an instant sell out for Sass & Bide? ‘The Afterworld’ tights: embellished with a complex pattern of studding and knee guards. Immediately earning themselves the nickname 'Bullet Tights', we’re already placing bets on who we’ll see wearing them first. (Heads up: a very brave soul!)
