Janelle Monae’s New Single Q.U.E.E.N – Five Reasons We Love Her

It’s been about a year since Janelle Monae featured on fun.’s  Generation Y anthem We Are Young,  but now she’s finally properly back with the first new single from her second album, Q.U.E.E.N (with Erykah Badu), and she’s sounding good. Here’s 5 reasons why we love her

1)   Cindi Mayweather

Her cyber sister alter ego, was the central figure of Janelle’s debut album The ArchAndroid, set in 2791. It was part Metropolis, part Blade Runner.

2)  Her Style

From her Pompadour, white tux and spats shoes, Janelle’s androgynous, monochrome style is totally ace and unique.

3)     The Cold War Video

A simple, but deeply affecting piece of filmmaking, watch and weep. We haven’t been this choked up since Sinead O’Connor shed a tear in the Nothing Compares 2 U video.

4)     Glastonbury

With her band dressed in black and white and jigging together like an engine of tightly coiled funk, Janelle’s Pilton performance reached levels of James Brown-like grandeur. Well done everyone.

5)    Many Moons

Taken from her early EP 2007’s Metropolis: Suite 1 (The Chase), this futuristic slice of space-funk was accompanied by this rather ace video.
