Well, Paris almost seemed to have saved the best for last. The Louis Vuitton show took place in a transparent tent in the middle of the Louvre. Arriving guests were greeted with a brass band playing can-can music and inside, the chairs were all upholstered in sugar pink. It was the merest hint of the girl-fest to come. According to Marc Jacobs, winter 2009 looks frilly, with fondant highlights and hovering on the edge of kinky with thigh-high corset-laced boots and a peek of candy-coloured underwear through dark tulle. Ruched leather, frilled taffeta, and frothy fabric flowers tucked into soft folds of fabric made it all seductively feminine. Touches like huge pearl pins in towering French-pleated hair and hourglass heels on shoes seemed like a 21st-century belle du jour. It took all our time to absorb the dozens of details peppering this show. And we loved it that tourists and kids on school trips passing through the Louvre could see everything through the clear plastic walls of the venue.
WHAT WE LOVED:
The chunky paper chain necklaces
The sugar pink underwear showing through fine knits and tulle layers.
The boxy red coats
The lingerie pinks and fleshy beige-coloured draped silks.
The ladylike black suits with frilled pink peplums
