Balenciaga kick-starts Paris Fashion Week

06 March 2009

Paris Fashion Week might have officially started yesterday with Brit Gareth Pugh's movie presentation, but the real buzz was the Balenciaga show this morning. Fashion editors crammed onto tiny gold benches at the Hotel Crillon in Paris, alongside newlyweds Salma Hayek and François-Henri Pinault, to see what one of the key fashion trendsetters Nicolas Ghesquière had done next. Turns out that, as we saw time and again in Milan, the reference was the 1980s: padded shoulders, cropped tops, devoré ruched-up dresses and spotty hosiery (very Lady Diana) were repeated throughout the collection. But that's not to say there weren't classic Balenciaga – and 21st century – touches. An amazing tailored jacket with strong shoulders. Beautifully cut trousers. And the double cuffs that made the models look warrior-like. It was, as Ghesquière intended, ‘very Parisian'. And a very good way to kick-start Paris Fashion Week...
