The backstory: After an hour in Friday night Paris rush hour traffic, the crowd was hoping McQueen would deliver what he is famous for - an amazing set that would set pulses racing for an amazing provocative show! Sure enough, when we walked in there was a giant 3D image of earth from space projected on back wall. In front of it, a menagerie of stuffed real wild game animals - from polar bear, giraffe, rhino to tiny fawn, stood sentry. Eerie but cool.
The venue: An ex-morgue on the outskirts of Paris. This fits the invitation: a holographic head shot of McQueen that when you moved it, became a sinister gold skull. This set tongues wagging - what would it mean?
The clothes: 'Putting The Juice Back in The Orange' was the working title of the show for S/S '09. McQueen was inspired by Charles Darwin, nature and how we need to protect it. The clothes were pure McQueen. Corsets over draped printed dresses were printed with bark patterns, while abstract animal and skull prints shaped the body. Structured micro gowns of encrusted crystals acted as the glamorous foil. We loved the sheer panelling, which is a major trend of season.
Standout pieces: The amber sequinned skintight catsuit worn by Jourdan Dunn. Get on the waiting list now for the black sequinned ankle boots.
What we especially loved: The late British club soundtrack! A Guy Called Gerald's Voodoo Ray and Madchester's Hacienda all over again! It was Stone Roses and the whole nine yards. McQueen ended the show by appearing in a rabbit suit to the tune of the Pink Panther! Hilarious.
