Jean Paul Gaultier dances to a different beat

01 October 2008

The place: Jean Paul Gaultier's fabulous building - a former Dairy, cinema and nightclub... in the middle of central Paris!

The people: Girls in striped tops show us to our seats. Mila Jovovich and divine-looking Dita Von Teese sit front row. (Is she trying to compete with Roisin Murphy's Milan Fashion Marathon with a Parisian version?)

The fashion: Classic JPG. The inspiration is all about dance and movement. Three dancers gyrate in front of dance studio mirrors on the runway before the show. Then they run crazily down the runway leading models in body-con swimwear. We're off! JPG shows sinuous body-hugging tailoring and a bonkers layering of swimwear over palazzo pants (that we're thinking only the skinniest can wear). But it soon segues into familiar classic JPG territory. A backless navy wrap jacket with pinstripe trousers is gorgeous. A chartreuse yellow frilled cocktail gown with a shawl of thick marabou feathers is beautiful. A black satin slip dress with a hem of fine lace and a circle of lace at the breastbone is instantly desirable.

The verdict: Look beyond the bonkers styling and you find some real gems!

PLUS the video: A so-guerrilla-it-really-feels-like-you-were there view of the dancers who introduced the show.
