Oscar de la Renta goes uptown

19 February 2009

Uptown for Oscar and the mood changes as soon as you step inside the Park Avenue venue. Out of the miserable weather and the Midtown mayhem, all is serenely organised and impeccably groomed. Even the sound system has tailormade white coveralls so nothing here is going to offend the eye. It's enough to make a windswept gal feel grubby. These were serious AM looks (ante-Madoff). In the glory days of the bull market Oscar's neat little knee-length shifts, billowy lace blouses and languid pants graced the smartest lunching establishments. While the jewel-coloured cocktail dresses and perfectly understated columns of crêpe defined the big givers at the charity benefits. In these less sparkly PM days (post-Madoff), it's anyone's guess where Oscar's divine gowns are likely to pop up next. Doubtless they live on behind old money's closed doors. We can but dream...

WHAT WE LOVED

1) Jourdan Dunn looking positively regal in a huge black and white print strapless gown.

2) Jewel satin cocktail dresses.

3) Cardigan with bugle-beaded collar.

4) The leopard-print one-shouldered column dress.

5) Gloves to finish a suit… how fabulously 1950s is that?
