This show was the funniest two fingers to the credit crunch ever seen on a catwalk. For A/W ’09 Marc Jacobs rewinds to the last great party decade, the 80s, and melds together the power-dressed party posse in their brocade, power shoulders and puffball skirts with the Blitz kids in their laquered hair, brothel creepers and fishnet. Imagine Ivana Trump and Steve Strange getting together and swapping style tips and you (sort of) have it. The show, which in the past has started up to two hours late, started two minutes early, and with no celebrities invited and many late arriving senior editors and store executives left outside, many of the highly coveted front-row seats were empty.
WHAT WE LOVED:
1) The students, assistants and interns who couldn't believe their luck at finding so many front-row seats up for grabs at a Marc Jacobs show.
2) The acid brights: poison yellow, Day-Glo pink and fluorescent green double-faced wool duffles with pixie hoods.
3) The khaki satin prom dress worn with flat purple clogs.
4) The bondage tuxedo pants with kilt apron.
5) The towering beehives and quaffs lacquered solid.
6) The cartoon-large black flannel headscarf, cape coat and acid-pink cigarette pants.
