Show report: Proenza Schouler’s puzzling collection

09 September 2008

Proenza Schouler: anyone for harem pants and leather harnesses? Anyone for balloon-sized shoulders? Proenza Schouler's front row at the cavernous Park Avenue Armory (basically an uptown military drill hall) was full of knitted brows. The audience, mostly in cotton shift dresses and flat shoes on account of the 80-degree heat, wondered what to make of the glazed aluminium pants, second-skin cellophane tops and bondage straps. It all looked too sticky for a hot New York day; too tricky for lives that are already complicated enough. Exaggerated curved shoulders had cartoon proportions and will struggle to look credible anywhere but on stage. Exposed zips seemed like an old and rather tired trick. However, the cotton and silk, cream and white combinations looked crisp and covetable. And their engineered, metal-heeled shoes looked fiendishly chic.
