We need YOU – and your clothes!

26 May 2009

You've heard of carbon neutral. Well now let us introduce you to Shopping Neutral! Yes people, it's shopping, it's guilt-free – and you get to help others all at the same time. How good does that feel? Shopping Neutral is a new shopping concept spearheaded by Mary Portas and Grazia. We want people to get into the habit of donating their own unwanted clothes every time they shop. It's a concept we hope will then be picked up all around the country. Did you know that 75% of donated charity shop stock is not of sufficient quality to be sold in store? We want to change that, so from 4 June for three weeks only, Grazia and Mary are running our very own pop-up charity shop in The Village at Westfield London, with all the money raised going to charities including Save the Children, MIND and Trees for Cities. It's called Mary's Living and Giving Shop and it is inspired by her latest series.

While Mary's retail team design the shop, it is our job at Grazia to fill it with great donations. Not only that, all of the magazine's staff are volunteering their time to work in the shop during its three weeks in Westfield's The Village. We were not planning to tell you about this until next week, but we told a few friends, who told a few friends and, before we knew it, the phones were ringing with people asking how they could offer donations. So read on to find out how you can give. So far Grazia friends Sarah Mower of American Vogue has offered some serious designer goodies, Harvey Nichols are donating clothes, Luella Bartley and Savannah Miller are giving away clothes and Brix Smith-Start is donating a work of art and a Miu Miu skirt suit!

SO GET SHOPPING NEUTRAL AND HELP US BY GIVING SOMETHING SPECIAL TO MARY'S CHARITY SHOP. It can be men's, women's or children's clothes, bric-a-brac, books and accessories. All we ask is that it has a minimum resale value of £5. A mosquito net, which can save the life of a child in Africa, costs £5.

Drop off your donations at any Save the Children shop in the UK, or send your donations clearly marked for "MARY'S LIVING AND GIVING SHOP" to Save the Children collection depot in Derby. Save the Children collection depot, 4a Cotton Brook Road, Sir Francis Ley Industrial Park South, Derby, DE23 8YH.

Alternatively, you can drop off your donations at Grazia HQ from 19 May to 4 June. Strictly between 9am and 6pm at 189 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JG. For further information call 0207 295 6779.

Come to Westfield London from 4-27 June when Mary's Living and Giving Shop in The Village opens and drop in your donations, before you carry on shopping. The shop closes on 27 June. Mary's Charity Shop will be next door to Donna Ida and Twenty8Twelve on the first floor in The Village at Westfield.
