Quick questions with Piers Atkinson

21 February 2009

Moments after the Ashish show, we found ourselves backstage face to face with milliner Piers Atkinson, the creator of those technicolour titfers, and managed to wrest him away from his packing boxes for some quick-fire questions.

So Piers, why hats?

My mum was a milliner so I've always made hats. Plus the celebratory, quirky nature of hats are the perfect antidote to the doom and gloom of the times.

Tell us about the hats you've got going into the Stephen Jones exhibition.

The hat that was supposed to go in got rejected - for being too big! So it's been replaced with something smaller, very colourful and made from found objects - and that's all I can reveal.

What's the solution to hat hair?

Never take your hat off. Or make your hat out of hair...Lady Ga Ga style!

What other LFW shows are you looking forward to?

All of them. I'm launching a blog for Vauxhall Fashion Scout [the off-schedule shows] - www.thefashionscout.blogspot.com - so all those shows can be seen online. Actually I'm very excited about Charlie Le Mindu - he makes fabulous hair hats.
