Giles' latest muse: Pac-man!

17 September 2008

Giles Deacon's fashion show last night had the atmosphere and energy of a celebration. Appropriate, given that it came hard on the heels of the crucial meeting between international fashion's organisers and the announcement that London Fashion Week's slot on the international calendar would indeed be saved.

Guests were served martinis on the way in and must have wondered if they'd had one too many when they came across the enormous pink pac-man ghost and catwalk dotted with bright yellow circles. Rumours had been circulating fashion land all afternoon that Giles was making the 1980's computer game heroes the star of his show. And some of the city's chicest ladies had turned up to find out what on earth the former British Designer of the Year planned to seduce them with a 1980's compute game character that looks like a pizza with a slice missing.

Alexa Chung, Misha Barton, Samantha Cameron, Leah Wood and Roisin Murphy, resplendent in red Lanvin dress and pale grey ostrich feathers, waited patiently for the show to start.

They were treated to an exercise in virtuoso tailoring, Giles-style. There were shapely shift dresses constructed with the precision of an origami master and accessorised with enormous ‘pac-man' hats; shiny patent skirts and multi strap shoes hinting at a dark side of the avuncular designer; and camouflage prints, worked out in everything from taffeta to paper fabric (another 1980's throwback, lovingly restored to high style). An entire cast of pac man characters in Swarowski crystals chased each other across a white satin cocktail dress.

And a series of shifts in turquoise, lemon and pink double jersey pushed the boundaries of prim and were sure fire crowd pleasers. While three seriously grand finale gowns justified Giles repeat appearance in the category for Red Carpet designer of the year.

In a subdued week, punctuated with scheduling and economic crises, Giles gave us lots to be happy about.
