Some of the One Direction boys have responded to the rumours that broke over the weekend, suggesting that the band were to split in March 2016 after the release of their fifth studio album.

After a day or so of silence, Niall Horan took to Twitter to respond to the rumours:

"Ok so Lots of rumours going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year" he tweeted.

"Don't worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve ! Can't wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform"

Louis Tomlinson then added "Your support is truly indescribable! It's just a break :) we're not going anywhere !!"

So everyone freaking out about the split, worry not - the boys are just taking a well-deserved break.

We're glad they cleared it all up, but kind of wish they'd announced it Ross Gellar style: "We were on a breeeeeeak!"

Directioners' hearts were broken across the land last night as reports emerged suggesting that One Direction were to split in March 2016 - but it might not be a permanent hiatus for the group.

The Sun reports that Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan are set to go their own way for a year so they can all focus on solo projects - with a One Direction source telling the tabloid:

“The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boy band. They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100% behind the decision. It is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future.”

Apparently the decision was made in London last weekend - although a spokesman for the band said: “We don’t comment on speculation.”

The news comes months after Zayn Malik left the band to focus on a solo career (although at the time he said it was so he could be a "normal 22 year-old") But a source said that he wasn't the reason for the band's break: “Of course, they would have preferred that he had stayed in the band, but they would have taken this extended hiatus even if he hadn’t left.”

So what next if the rumours are true? Harry Styles is reportedly attracting a "lot of interest" from Hollywood and Liam Payne is supposedly in the running for a role on The X Factor.
