It’s not often that you find a performer that encapsulates so many of the traits that you hold dear to your favourite artists. Honest writing, brilliant hair and a pair of great lungs. As the time rolls around for his debut album ‘Time’ to come out in the UK Ekko reflects on some of the moments over the past year that have helped him to create his debut project.
Mikky Ekko hit international recognition following the release of his No.1 heart felt song ‘Stay’ with Rihanna in 2012.
Ekko spoke of some of the internal pressures he faced in releasing ‘Stay’ with Rihanna saying “I found it pretty hard to part with Stay, that’s the prime example of two humans feeling the exact same thing at the exact same time which is important”
His debut album ‘Time’ is one to look forward to, describing the mix of genres and musical styles Ekko promised himself to be as open and honest as possible in his writing in a effort for his fans to feel closer to him.
“There were three things that were really important to me with my debut, to not be afraid to keep the album diverse so it’s everything from the punk rock stuff I love to the R&B and the acoustic stuff. Then, that I kept the songs honest and vulnerable and that I was willing to give the fans a window into who I am as an artist and to me that meant having songs that felt really immediate”
There are a plethora of musical styles on the album stretching from punk rock with the rebellious fiery track ‘Riot’ down to ‘U’ which oozes a sultry mood with the electronic R&B elements.
“Particularly with a song like ‘U’ I never like to do many takes, I have to be in the zone. That’s probably one of my favourite songs to sing”
‘Time’ combines Ekko’s powerful gritty vocals and sincere writing on top of a daring and diverse range of musical genres, this album is definitely one to dig into.
